Orange Sunshine Smoothie

Orange Sunshine Smoothie

 |

This smoothie will make your taste-buds sing. It's one of the sweeter smoothies in my repetoire, so I recommend making it only on occasion. But if you're craving a treat that tastes just like summer, this is the smoothie for you.

This concoction came about by accident, a product of me throwing what I had in my freezer/fridge into my blender as I packed up my New York apartment, getting ready for my cross country trek back to my hometown of Cincinnati, Ohio. I had a few carrots leftover that I quickly juiced and blended with fresh orange juice, frozen mango, frozen pineapple, a knob of ginger, flax oil and a splash of aloe juice. After a day of packing, it was refreshing perfection!

We finally made it to our new apartment in Cincinnati, and are thrilled to finally be here. Because it's where I grew up, I feel right at home, though the city has changed a lot since I left 8 years ago (or maybe I just grew up and appreciate the culture a lot more now!). Regardless, Mike and I are so excited to explore, and I can't wait to keep cooking up a storm in my new kitchen. After living in NYC for 4 years, I started to forget having a workable kitchen -- not to mention one with a dishwasher-- was normal! As you can see in the photo below, we just got a new furry friend named Trout to join us on our new adventure. He loves to climb on things so you may see him popping up in recipes to come.

Feel free to throw some greens into your blender for extra nutrition, or simply enjoy as is. I topped mine with a little shredded coconut and a few hemp seeds, but you can get more playful with toppings too.

Health Rundown:

We all know that fresh fruits and veggies are great for us -- oranges for their cold-fighting vitamin C content, carrots for vision-improving beta-carotene, and pineapple for it's plethora of enzymes. But why the addition of aloe and flax oil here? Smoothies are a great place to sneak in health boosters, and both aloe and flax oil are just that. While aloe is most commonly known for its topical benefits, specifically for sunburns, aloe vera juice is actually a great bowel regulator that keeps you moving. And if you're vegan or vegetarian, flax oil is a great plant source of omega-3 fatty acids, which help to regulate and maintain a healthy brain.
